Hello, well at this point I have completely given up trying to fix my problem
on my own, so I figured I would seek professional help!!! Well a few days ago
I bought a new desktop computer, an HP Pavilion a1120n, running a
preinstalled Windows XP home edition, and I thought it would be an easy task
to transfer my files from my old computer, running Windows 98 first edition,
on a Packard Bell computer (Mll 333 MMX Processor) to my new one, however
these past few days I was proven completely wrong. It feels like I have
tried everything. I have bought and returned several different cables
(Belkin direct cable connection cable, switchbox cable, serial/parallel
cable) that retailers assured me would work; they really didn't. To top it
all off I was inserting them in the printer port of the old computer!!! I
have called HP customer service, which Microsoft said was supposed to help
since windows was preinstalled, they weren't any help either they said they
didn't deal with networking. I just today bought what I think is the correct
cable, a Tripp-Lite Null Modem Gold Cable, (which for the first time actually
went in the right port in my old computer) but the problem continues. Well
all along I have been trying to run Direct cable connection on my old windows
98 computer. I have followed all the steps, I enabled the file and printer
sharing, I added the TCP and NetBeiu protocols. The program starts running,
but then asks if the new computer is running. On the other side, on my new
computer, those steps were already completed, I also turn off windows
firewall which I thought was the problem, and Norton Anti-virus as well,
which seemed to block the connection cause it thought it was a Trojan, I
disable the programs and even log off. I also go in settings an click on
"allow others to make a connection...." Yet the problem persists. I ALWAYS
GET THE ERROR 628 MESSAGE!!!! "The connection has been cancelled by the
remote computer.." This happens after I go into network connections, create a
new connection, and then follow the proper steps "advanced connection,
directly to other computer, using parallel, ..., and then it asks for user
and password. I have been contemplating whether that is where I go wrong, I
simply either write nothing and connect, or enter my administrator name and
password and connect. It always says the same thing ERROR 628. But it
doesn't end here. I also tried other methods, "the files and settings
wizard" however this option is impossible as well seeing how it says I have
to put the windows xp cd in my old computer. I do have the cd, but my old
computer is a 32-bit, and it says that it is not supported by win32 (which I
read meant it was a 64 bit). I have also read something about remote
desktop, but it only runs on windows xp professional, I checked in
add/remove, I don't have the program. Well I think that is about it. I am
very sorry for the length of this problem but I am extremely desperate, I
really need these important files (which are too large and numerous to send
through the internet), and my old computer doesn't support a USB key!!!! I
don’t want any programs or any settings transferred, just my school, work and
music data. PLEASE HELP. Thank you so much for your time, Hope to hear from
someone soon!!!

It is usually quicker to copy your files via CD-R.

Either do as Jim suggested or if the old computer doesn't have a CD-RW
drive:

1. Remove the hard drive from the old computer and slave it temporarily
in the new computer. Copy the files over using Windows Explorer in the
new XP installation.

2. If that seems like too much, call a professional computer repair
person to do the job for you.

Post back if you want more precise instructions about how to slave the
hard drive.
