Cannot start XP Task Manager and Regedit

I have started getting a problem with XP Home Edition where I cannot
start REGEDIT or REGEDT32 - all I get is the editor windows opening
then quickly closing.
I also cannot view Task Manager, either when using CTL/ALT/DEL or
right-clicking the bar. All I get is an icon in my system tray which
disappears when I put my cursor over it.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Thanks very much - have downloaded the replacement progs in the short-term.
