cannot start the event log or task scheduler services though they are enabled

I have discovered that the event log service could not be
started so I did some rather extensive trouble shooting on
my own. I was able to discover, as far as I can ascertain,
that only two services cannot be started. Those two
services are Event Log and Task Scheduler.

The various error msgs from attempting to get these
services started are as follows:

1. Error 1501: No event log file could be opened, so the
event logging service did not start.

gloss on error msg: 1501 (Error)
DNS_EVENT_COULD_NOT_PARSE_DATABASE
The DNS server could not parse zone file %1 for zone %2.
Check that the zone file is located in the %SystemRoot%
\System32\Dns folder and that it contains valid data.

2. Unable to complete the operation of "System Log". The
interface is unknown.

3. Could not start the Event Log service on Local
Computer. Error 1501: No event log file could be opened,
so the event logging did not start.

4. for Task Scheduler: Could not start Task Scheduler on
Local Computer. Error 1717: The interface is unknown.

Any help as to how to trouble shoot this problem and get
these two services back up and running would be greatly
appreciated. I should add that the error msgs on the event
log indicate that none of of evt logs can be opened. It
does not explain why.
