Cannot start an Apeltalk Zone from my Win2k3 server

Paul

Hi,

We have setup a new environment with a w2k3 fileserver
with SFM started and 3 Mac G5 with OSX 10.3.1. However
the server does not "feed" a zone for appletalk. Probably
some error in our setup, but we cannot figure out what!
Please I am not very knowledged with either Mac OSX or
Win 2003 servers.

Hi Paul!

Are you referring to Appletalk seeding? This is where a router typically
controls the Appletalk on a network and assigns network numbers to Macs
within a zone that it is also creating.

Do you have a need for zones? If you are only running one network segment
with any Appletalk devices then you don't need to seed your network and
don't need zones. "No zones available" is OK.

If you _are_ using your server as an Appletalk router and connecting two or
more physically separate Appletalk network segments together, you'll need to
open Routing and Remote Access and enable Appletalk routing. And then create
zones and set network numbers here.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi Paul!

The ability to create zones using a Windows server is found in Appletalk
Routing, which is in Routing and Remote Access.

Are you sure you need zones? You'll only need zones if you are connecting
two physically separate Appletalk network using your server as a router or
if your one network is so large (several hundred Appletalk devices) that you
need to break down machines into more manageable groups.

If you are concerned with seeing "No zones available", this is normal and
nothing to worry about. Zones are not needed in single network environments.

Hope this helps! bill
