Cannot shutdown in RC1

Beck

I cannot shutdown my laptop correctly now with RC1, it goes to the shutdown
splash screen and just sits there with the cursor circle going round and
round.

I have checked the event log and it has logged improper shutdowns (where I
forced it to shutdown by holding the off button) but it does not give any
other information as to what may be causing this. It has happened twice or
three times since yesterday.

Probably will not help but my specs are 1Gb ram, 128mb graphics, 40Gb hdd
partition, Acer Aspire 3613.

After a bad shutdown, when I restart I get the improper shutdown menu and I
can restart normally. I have not yet filed a bug report but will do in due
course when I can gather together more information.

Hi,

Have you tried killing processes with Task Manager before shutting down?

How are you shutting down, Beck? Are you using the power button
or doing it from the Start Menu?

I think by default, the power button is turned into that "hybrid"
standby/sleep/hibernation crap. The whole power down options,
especially for a laptop, have been hosed. I use to put this laptop
into "Standby" without ever having any problems with it going to
sleep or waking up. Now, I either have to leave it on or totally
shut it down.

I will do that next time, thanks. Obviously there must be a process which
is affecting shutdown. I might try each one by one until I find the
culprit.

I always shutdown using start-shutdown. I don't like to use the power
button as its not meant for shutting down, but I do use it if shutdown does
not work.

I may have solved this. As I suspected I think the synaptics touchpad
drivers were interfering.
I have uninstalled them for now.

Hi Beck,

You are right about the Synaptics drivers. I had the identical problem with
my Acer Ferrari 4000 (coincidence?) and had to uninstall (not just roll back)
the touchpad software. The problem is back now, after I installed Texas
Instruments drivers for the media card reader (from the Acer web site), so
looks like those will have to go too. I miss the scroll feature of the
touchpad which is not provided by the generic MS drivers, plus the card
reader doesn't function at all without the third-party software. Hope
Synaptics and TI will update them soon.

Cheers

Nik
