We have suddenly lost the ability to send email through Outlook 2003 (OS is
Windows XP Pro SP2). Can receive incoming email just fine. Did nothing to
alter the setting in Outlook and this is happening two separate email
accounts with two separate users. Get an error message that Outlook cannot
find the smtp server. I have checked with my IPS and the settings are still
correct. Any ideas what could have happened to cause this problem?

So have you tried pinging that SMTP server by its IP name, or done a
lookup on its IP name (to get back its IP address which is what
computers use) to know that you are entering the correct value and that
your DNS server has an entry for it (or can pass it upstream to the next
DNS server to find it there)?

ping <hostname>

or

nslookup <hostname>

You should get back an IP address. If that hostname isn't defined then
you are entering the wrong IP name for it or it is not defined (i.e.,
you have the wrong name).

So just WHAT is the IP name of the mail server(s) to which you are
trying to connect?

This error usually signifies that you are using an Anti Virus program with incoming and outgoing email scanning. Also it can be your Anti Spam filter being set at high.

Disable your AV incoming and outgoing email scanner. Your AV resident scan will still protect you. Are you using a Symantec or MacAfee AV?

You would be better off by using something like Avast,AVG free or even Nod32 without the email scanning option not set.
