I cannot see any other computers in my network right now but I can access
the internet fine.. I am able to ping other computers that are on my network
and they can ping my computer. All the other computers can see each other
fine but they cannot see my computer. I doubled checked the subnet and the
workgroup and there is nothing wrong there. I tried putting in a new NIC
card and changing new cables but problem still persist. Everything was
working fine yesterday. Any ideas whats going on?

Thanks,

J

Just wanted to add that i have disabled norton internet security and windows
firewall.

Johnny,

Disabling Norton Personal Firewall isn't always a solution - you should either
un install it (using all procedures from Symantec), or configure it properly.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
Also, check registry setting restrictanonymous.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp>

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Chuck,

I was able to do the ipconfig but was not able to do browstat. I get the
error message you refer to in your guide so i tried to download browstat but
it would just freeze when i try to download anything. whats the next course
or action i need to take.

Johnny,

Browstat is a pretty small program, and in your case, it's going to be pretty
useful. Did you try downloading from all 3 sites (Dynawell, Microsoft, and
Stanford)? There are actually other websites too, if you Google for "download
browstat" you'll find others.

Did you check restrictanonymous first? That's been a rather effective
workaround for your problem - Google in this group if you don't believe me.

And you have provided "ipconfig /all" for Crusty, but no other. Both "browstat
status" and "ipconfig /all" will be most useful if provided for all computers.
Until we diagnose the problem, you don't know where the problem is, so we need
to inspect all computers on the LAN.

Chuck,

I did check restrictanonymous and the value is 0. I downloaded browstat from
another machine and ran it on mine. I did not get any results since it would
just hang when i run browstat (tried about 5 times and received empty text
file). While searching the web I noticed the pages would not loaded fully.
Most of the time the images on the web page would not load. Not sure if this
might give u a clue of whats going on. Here are the ipconfigs for the 2
machines on the network.

Johnny,

If you just run "browstat status" from the command prompt, what do you see? If
you're truly getting a hand, and no output even then, check the protocol list
for unnecessary entries.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

We really need browstat reports right now, as I don't see anything interesting
in the ipconfigs.

What did you do about NPF?

Chuck,

when i run browstat status this is what i get:

Status for domain Crestware Inc. on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{BEE1DB9B-D130-4856-A28E-01E4DFBBB1A7}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: Phoenix

It seems to hang for a bit and than I got these message:

Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build
of browser master: 53

It than hangs again for several minutes and than message appears:

Unable to determine server information for browser master: 2114
2 backup servers retrieved from master Phoenix
\\Hagrid
\\Phoenix
Unable to retrieve server list from Phoenix: 64

Thanks,

J

Johnny,

OK, this is getting fun. You do want to resolve this, right?

So far, we have ipconfigs from:
# Crusty
# Matrix
# Zubat
And we have a single browstat from an unnamed computer that refers to:
# Hagrid
# Phoenix

Your browstat hints at a name resolution ("error = 53") issue.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>

You also have a connection problem with Phoenix, an error 2114.
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197769>

Check all of the computers, and make sure that they have all necessary protocols
and services running.

What did you do about NPF?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

If no help yet, we really need to see "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from
all computers. Or YOU need to examine them; maybe these articles will help.
