Help: I am trying to set up a small network with my desktop and my Laptop. Both computers use Windows XP Pro. I select the option to create a network and run the Network Wixard. I create the network disk and the set up Wizard tell me that I have successfully set up a small network on the first computer. I run the setup disc in the laptop again using the wizard and it once again tells me that I have successfully set up a small network.. At the end of this I am unable to see the other computer. When I go to Network places I only see the computer I am on.

My Connections are as follows. The internet enters the cable modem. From the modemthe signal enters my hub. from the hub one cable connects to my desktop and one connects to my laptop. The radio button that I choose when the wizard is running is the one that says that I am connecting through a residential gateway. I have been trting now for four days to set this up and would appreciate any assistance which would help me.

Hi Steve,
This is a common networking problem in XP. Try
the following steps:
Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or
disabled. With XP Pro, you need to have the SFS settings
properly set on each computer. With XP Pro, if SFS is
disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security
Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security
model", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users
authenticate as themselves".
With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy
to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest account is
enabled, through Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank,
password on all computers. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.
For XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, through Local User
Manager (Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc"), on each computer.
Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or
third party)? If so, you need to configure them for file
sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138,
445, and / or by identifying the other computers as
present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall
configurations are a very common cause of (network)
browser, and file sharing, problems.
Let me know if you need any further assistance, Luke.

Hi Luke.

Many thanks for you help,. Unfortunately the problem has not been resolved. I followed all the procedures you mentioned and then reinstalled the network using the Wizard. I got the same result. To check that it was not ZoneAlarm which was causing the problem I actually shut it down on the laptop but still no result. When I look in "My Network Places" all I see is the computer I am currently working on.

Any further ideas or suggestions would be gratefully accepted as this is slowly driving me nuts.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the update. I am currently
researching the issue. In the meantime could you please
run the network diagnostic test and see if any part fails.
1. Open Help & Support Center
2. Go to 'fixing a problem' > 'Networking Problems' >
Choose 'diagnose network config and run...'
3. Choose scanning options, check all of the boxes
4. Click scan system
5. If there are any errors please choose 'save to file'
and send me the report.
Thanks, Luke.

Try going into services and looking for a couple of service thta look like the have names to do with Zone Alarm and diable them.or uninstall Zone Alam completly as I had the same problem and just diableing Zone Alarm with it's own method doe's not stop it altogether, the other way is to ensure Zone Alarm doe's not start up when u reboot and then u can see if Zone Alarm is the problem.
You get to services by Start,Control Panel,Admin Tools,Services
