cannot see network connection

When I open the network connections folder in windows XP, the folder
is empty. Internet connection works without a problem (Charter 3MB
download w/ Terayon TJ715x cable modem). Ipconfig from command prompt
verifies ip address etc. Changing the driver for the network card
displayed a new connection in the folder that was labeled as
"disabled" but the connection dissappeared after closing the window.
When you open the connection, it is blank - no tcp/ip or anything else
you would expect to see. The same thing happened when I switched from
my onboard lan port to my Dlink 530tx+ pci lan card. I need to get to
the connection properties so I can enable file sharing for the network
I am trying to set up.

Specs
Windows XP Pro SP1
Norton Antivirus always updated - disabling does not resolve issue
Norton Internet Security - disabling does not resolve issue
Charter 3MB cable internet
Terayon TJ715x cable modem
Dlink 530tx+ pci lan card
Athlon XP 2500+ Barton core
Biostar M7NCG 400 mobo
Kingston Value PC2700 ddr

Your help is greatly appreciated.

In case anyone else has this issue, I am posting my solution. Installing
the Beta version of XP service pack 2 has corrected the problem. Hope this
helps somebody else.
