On my father's windows xp, there's a strangeness to the
search. He cannnot use the search options to search on his
computer anymore (Start->Search).

The error says missing files but never specifies what
files are missing, but if you are connected to the
internet, the search options appear again and you can
search on your computer again.

How do you fix this?

Hi Ninta,

Error "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup.."

Method 1:
1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator
permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This
reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

NOTE: If you are prompted for the location of msgr3en.dll and your computer
came with Windows XP preinstalled, it is likely to be at C:\Windows\i386.
Type C:\Windows\i386 into the Copy Files From dialog and press OK.

Method 2:
Download a fix from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://www.microsoft.co
m%2fDownloads%2fRelease.asp%3fReleaseID%3d39318

Method 3:
1. Disable any anti-virus program, any BIOS anti-virus, and any 3rd party
system tool that monitors files.
2. Run SFC /SCANNOW.
3. If the Search is not fixed, perform a repair installation of Windows XP.
