Cannot save previously saved documents when opened to edit

I cannot resave previously created documents or save any attachments sent.
The Word 2003 does not respond. I can save newly created document; however
once I open them, I cannot resave. I hope someone can help. I did check to
see if I needed any updates. I did not. I just began having this problem in
the last 24 hours.
