Hello, I am trying to restore our computer to an earlier date to remove some
things my husband downloaded (and that really screwed up our computer)...But
I can't restore it to an earlier date. Can someone please advise as to why
this can't be done and is there any way to restore it to the previous day?

Thanks for your help!

Hi

What, if any, error messages are you getting when trying to restore your
system?

System Restore when it works it does a fantastic job and when it does
not for most of us it can be quite difficult to fathom out why it is not
working as intended.

What exactly is the problem which prompted you to want to use
System Restore? This might be easier to fix another way allowing time
to work out how to make System Restore work for you.

If you look at the link I posted you will see that there are a number of
issues which can cause failure. Some questions:

What is your computer make and model?

Do you have a removable external hard drive?

Do you have Norton or Zone Alarm programmes installed?

What drives is System Restore monitoring? Right click on the
My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, System
Restore. Look at the list of available drives using the scroll and note
which are monitored and which are turned off.

I would also introduce you to the Event Viewer Log files.

Check for Error / Warning Reports in the System / Application logs
in Event Viewer over the last 24 hours. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. If you have
not seen these logs I would leave their interpretation to others.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event
Viewer.

That's more than enough to keep you busy for a little while <G>.

I am having basically the same problem. Regardless of what restore date I ask
for I get the same message, "could not be restored to -------. Its really
frustrating and I need some help. However, I am not exactly a whiz with a
computer but I will try to follow any instructions I can get.
Thanks

hello Tj! i think i can help you. I got the same problem last month with
system restore then i tried an other option.i used LAST KNOWN GOOD
CONFIGURATION option.i think this will also help you.To use this follow
this.when your windows xp starts press F8 then there will be this option.
If this will not help you then follow the same option but use this SAFE MODE
..you will enter into windows as an administrator then use the event viwer to
find which has been installed on your pc.
remove that by uninstalling it.
GOOD luck reply me soon.

Hi TJ,

Does System Restore work in Safe Mode?

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup
to start your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a command prompt.
2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an
account that has administrator credentials.
3. In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run
box then press Enter. In Safe Mode Command Prompt type the following command
then press ENTER.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your
computer to an earlier state, or undo the last restore if available.

Hi Ramiz,

Choosing the Last Known Good Configuration startup option provides a way to
recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be incorrect for
your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by corrupted or missing
drivers or files.
When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, only the information in
registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet is restored. Any changes made to
other registry keys remain.

So you can see, Last Known Good Configuration is very limited.

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration
feature in WinXP
