Cannot receive or send Windows Mail

K

KarenLea

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'KT MAIL', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket
Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Can anyone help me fix whatever is causing the error described above? I use
IE&, Windows Vista home premium.
Thanks for any help!

That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off.

Thanks, Gary! I run Webroot Anti-Virus & Spysweeper, also Webroot Firewall. I
have just turned off the 'check e-mail attachment' option of Webroot
Antivirus, restarted my computer. Now I am ok in Windows Mail!
But, there has been no problem in the past with the email option turned
on--that baffles me. Nevertheless, for now everything is working and I do
appreciate your response!

Oh, and have there been known problems with Webroot applications?

Gary, I have been having the same problem since May. I have unchecked and
rechecked and unchecked again the SSL in windows mail. I finaly got the
error messages to stop but it still won't connect. When I saw this I turned
off my email scanning & restarted but it still didn't work. I have Norton
and figure that's most likely the problem. Do you know how I can fix this?

First of all, you should not change settings in your email program
unless your mail provider specifically supports that new setting.
If in doubt, ask here first.

If you are not getting any error messages, but your Windows Mail
is not working, it is probably caused by your antivirus program.
Norton is one of the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
To prove that it is indeed the culprit, uninstall Norton, and follow up
with their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Alternatively, you could upgrade to Windows Live Mail, because it is less
prone to suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

I have been trying to find out what the problem is since May. I went to all
the discussion groups about the error # I was getting and followed their
instructions. The last one told me to uncheck all the secure connection
options. When I did that it stopped giving the error messages but still
would not connect. Thats when I searched not being able to send and receive.
That brought me here. I will try uninstalling Norton but what do I do then?

Uninstalling Norton (followed up by that cleanup tool) is only a test
to determine if Norton really is the culprit. If there is no change in your
Windows Mail, you can reinstall Norton. If there is improvement,
you have two choices:

a) Install one of the more compatible free antivirus programs.
We can recommend specific ones when you are ready for that step.
or
b) Upgrade your Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail (WLM), then
reinstall Norton. WLM is less prone to suffering bad effects from
overly aggressive antivirus programs.

I had the same prob lems as Karen. I can't send or receive emails. I have
Rogers for my internet and they gave me a Rogers email address which I have
been using but I would like to use Windows Mail as I used Outlook express
previously. I set Windows Mail as my default and entered the POP3 and SMTP
info in but it still doesn't work. I have Windows Live OneCare as my anti
virus. How do I turn off anti virus for my mail?

Windows Live OneCare is from Microsoft, so they're more likely to have
used some method of connecting to Windows Mail that works better but
Microsoft hasn't told other antivirus companies about.

Check your list of installed programs for any of these three programs:
Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, and SMS Desktop. If you find any
of them, uninstall them since they also cause problems in Windows
Mail. Web sites that let you do a Google search are not a problem.

Did you ever have am antivirus program from Norton or McAfee on
that machine, even if it was one of the free trial versions that often come
already installed on new machines? If so, tell us which one and we'll
tell you where to find the cleanup program to take care of the
troublesome parts that just uninstalling those antivirus programs often
leaves behind.

For your Rogers email address and any other email addresses you want to
use, could you tell us the part starting with @? If you told us that, we
could
try to look up instructions for connecting Windows Mail to it.

Please post a copy of both the send error message and the receive
error message.

These are the messages I am getting

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'name', Server: 'pop.broadband.rogers.com', Protocol:

I don't know if these email setup instructions are still valid, but
they are somewhat different than the settings you are using:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/ca/rogers/mail/original/pop/pop-08.html

Your receive settings look fine. However, the send settings are
problematic. In particular, The SSL option should not be used.
Note: Port 587 is not mentioned in the above instructions, but it should work.

Also note that the instructions sometimes refer to
pop.broadband.rogers.com and other times to
plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com. Don't be concerned about that because
those server names are aliases for each other.

Your receive failure is likely to be caused by your antivirus program.
Unfortunately, OneCare has no setting to disable email scanning.
I don't recommend uninstalling OneCare at this time. For now, do this:
delete that rogers.com mail account, restart Windows Mail, then
recreate that account. If no improvement, let me know.

I deselected the SSL option and my emails in the outbox started to go thru
but very very slowly. I then got the following error messages before they
all went thru. I haven't received any mail thru Windows Mail as yet. I am
not sure how to delete the Rogers account and recreate Windows Mail account
(what info do I put in to start the account?)

We solved one send error, but you still have other problems.
Both the remaining send error and the receive error point to
interference from your antivirus program. One option is to
uninstall OneCare. However, I recommend a different option
which is to install a newer email program:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Windows Live Mail has proved to be less bothered by interference
from antivirus programs..

Thankyou for your help. I downloaded the Windows Live and made it my default
email address. I think the problem is solved. I hope!
