Ensure that you are using the corREcT password and username when entering it
in WM, remember that the password is case sensiTiVe

Do it at tools>accounts>select the account>properties>server tab

Never attempt to put the details into the security pop up, always click
cancel on that.

On the server tab ensure that "log on using secure password authentication"
is not checked.

Check all your settings against those provided here:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=86382

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86383

You might consider removing the account and starting again using the above
instructions?

I have done everything listed below and am still getting this error message:
Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.', Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
I am using the correct password, have uninstalled my Webroot Spy Sweeper and
nothing seems to work.

A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

I have done all the things that you have mentioned and it still will not
work. I cannot even get it to work in Window Live Mail. I get the same
error message as listed last. I can access this email through tds.net but I
do like the funtionality of Windows Mail and Window Live Mail. I cannot get
either one to import from my ISP.

Not sure what you mean by accessing that email through tds.net.
How do you access Gmail through tds.net?

I assume you have gone to http://gmail.com and verified you can log in
with that username and password.
Other than that, I don't know what else you can do.

TDS is my ISP and that is who I have my email set up through. I was able to
import to Windows mail but as you can tell from this stream that that is no
longer happening. It will not work on Windows Live mail either. Thanks for
all your help.

According to that error message shown below, you have enabled an option
that Gmail does not support.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

This one is a real puzzler Gary, the poster is either skipping the
instructions or we are all missing something?

I posted the following, to which they replied, "done all that":

If not, what is the latest full error message?

Have you gone in your browser to http://gmail.com and verified that you
can log in with that username and password?
Other than that, I don't know what else you can do.
Perhaps open a new Gmail account.
