Cannot receive mail

Im working on windows xp and its been fine for 12 months +. Now it says im
on line but have no new messages, when i click send/receive it authorises,
connects and disconnects all in a few seconds. I am having to read my mail
on my providers website.

P.s im not at all technical so in plain English please.

You say you are on Windows XP?
The newsgroup to which you posted is dedicated to supporting the
Windows Mail program, which runs only on Vista.
What is the name of your email program?
