cannot receive .exe files

One of the updates which I installed from Microsoft does
not allow me to receive .exe and other files. this
includes the Microsoft upgrades as well as other vendors.
any suggestions?
I have been having friends do the download and rename the
extension and them email and I convert back, Not a good
way to run a computer.
