I have a dual boot system, Window 98 and XP, with 98 on the "c:" partition on a 30 gig hard drive and XP on the "I:" partition on a 60 gig hard drive. XP started having problems logging on to Microsoft.com to update, and Internet Explorer kept getting error messages when I would try to go to microsoft.com. I istalled Norton Systme works Pro 2004 to try to strainghten things out, but ended up with an activation messagee. By the time I could activtate again, I started getting locked out of XP and cannot log on or re-activate. I can access the I: partition through Windows 98. Is there anything I can do?
Thank you.

Ahem, :)

Now that you have the process down, simple re-install XP, get your ISP connected go to windows update from your browser, scan for updates, select SP1 (if present, otherwise select all the patches)

After instalation and reboot, load Norton.

When you do the re-install, del and create the partition on 60 GB drive.

You will get the activation popup in the tray eventually.
It will eiher let you do it or ask you to call in with the numbers.

No way around that part but you should have 30 days.

Norton may have made a tangled system worse. If you have lost
activation you should at least be able to boot with the F8 key,
immediately after selecting the system, to the menu, Safe Mode and from
that do an activation by phoning in, at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows.

But things may be in such a tangle that your best course is to back up
the data, clear out that partition and start over

Alex,

I tried the safe mode, and actually got in, but it came up
with an error saying that I could not activate XP from
safe mode. When I go to the normal mode, it boots all the
way to the desktop background and flashes the frame for
the activation window. Is there any way to make a change
through safe mode that will let me access the activation.
This is my own store bought copy of WIndows XP, and I wure
would like to get back to using that part of my system.
Thank you in advance.

In Safe mode, if you run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate windows
you *ought* to be able to use the 'activate by phone' option.

If it comes up plain blank, something may have deregistered the relevant
dlls - go to Start - Run and run
regsvr32 regwizc.dll
regsvre32 licdll.dll
and try again
