cannot play dvd on my sony laptop .....

I have even installed the latest version of direct-x and win-dvd but
cannot play any dvd's on my laptop. There is an article on the support
website but
there is no patch for it ....

Can you see files on the DVDs if you look at them in Explorer? If the
answer is also no, the problem may be hardware.
