I have a windows 2000 server that cannot be pinged by any
clients. I also cannot ping any clients from the server.
I can ping 127.0.0.1 and its own ip. I can access the
server using unc from a client and see all shares on the
system no problem. however pinging is failing. does
anyone have any sort of solution for this? I think this is
causing the error I get on my client. the error is ID 1000
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. Return value (59). this started when the
pinging stopped.

Hello,

Did you installed any firewall software recently or activated the firewall
in windows 2000 ??? If you done this you have to activate the echo request
in the firewall.
It´s normal that you can acess the dc with vnc because it uses a protocol to
communicate... as for 127.0.0.1 that is the host itself, and it´s own ip is
normal that you can ping.

no firewall was installed or activated.

Have you installed any some sort of firewall on your computers.

Since the network is not being blocked by a firewall, Then all I could
suggest is to make sure that your network basics are down....

All machines have the same subnet..... i.e.. 255.255.255.0
All machines have the same IP except for the subnet part that is zero.
All machines are pointing to the same gateway .... usually the IP of a
router.

yes those are all correct.. I am wondering if maybe an
aborted install of SP4 may have something to do with it
anyone know?

ok I was able to finish the SP4 update and now it is
working fine.. Thanks for all the input.
