Cannot ping my machine

I am at a loss to understand why my home computer cannot be pinged from a
remote location:

- Running Windows XP Pro with all updates installed.

- The latest version of Norton Internet Security enabled.

- Connected via high-speed ADSL, with no routers or networks.

Can anyone provide a clue?

Sorry, I should have said I have version NIS 2005. The instructions below
apply to versions 2002 and 2003.
