cannot open wps from word

I am having problems converting a WPS file - I
have Office premium 2000 ( word 2000)
and have downloaded and run works convertor
wp6rtf.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
familyid=b9e11e83-f51b-4977-b572-
8c042df802c1&displaylang=en

but in the word/files/open/files of type ---- there is no
works 6 I have works 4 for windows and works 2000 !!!

However it still does not open the works downloaded doc -
Word opens it in a series of garbled symbols etc.

What have I done wrong - I have also tried opening the doc
from word\file\open\ files of type , but there is not a works
6 - there is works 2000 and works 4 for windows ??!!

I have also tried control panel / add remove programs/ add/remove and then
office 2000 premium remove / add or remove features and then selected
converters and filters and update now - but I still do not get works 6 and
the document only opens as garbage!!!
What am I doing wrong??

Should I do the office update ?
and install service release 1a ??

on further reading - there is a security patch KB824993 which could also be
useful - it includes a WP.5x converter

All discussion of WordPerfect converters is irrelevant since a .wps file is
created by Microsoft Works. WP creates .wpd files.

When you reinstalled, did you install all the available text converters?

On the General tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Confirm conversion
at Open" (if you have not already done so). This will give you a chance to
see what converter Word is trying to use and select a more appropriate one
(if available). Is it possible that you had downloaded additional converters
from the Office Download site?

Suzanne - you little beauty - a biig hug and squeeze - I did what you
suggested about confirm conversion and it is opening them as 'textonly' i
selected works 2000 from the drop down and yahoo - it worked!!!
So why / how do I have it automatically convert from the correct
association?
I have been to Control panel/ view / file types and I have wps open with
word
But I guess that this is not enough based on this new insight !!

This is just a guess, but I don't think you should try to associate the .wps
file type with Word, as this evidently just confuses Word. This means that
you will need to open the Works files from within Word (not by
double-clicking on them in Explorer, though you *might* get the same result
by right-clicking and selecting Open With: Word), since this will trigger
the Convert File dialog, which is evidently what needs to happen. The reason
this is a guess is that I keep Word running all day and open all files using
its File | Open dialog rather than Explorer, so I don't have much experience
with this.
