Cannot Open Volumn for Direct Access

Hi,
I have the following problem. When CHECKDISK runs at
Startup, an error message always shows up "Cannot Open
Volumn for Direct Access."

Thanks for Kelly's suggestion. Although Symantec
AntiVirus perhaps is one of the causes for this problem,
I do think it's NOT the case for me. Before I "re-
installed" winXP Pro, the system in which Norton
Antivirus was installed could run CHECKDISK without any
problem. But the error message above appears after I re-
installed WinXP Pro.

Although the Microsoft knowledge base article (823439),
issued on 8/14/2003, suggests that Microsoft is still
researching the problem similar to mine, does anyone have
any other idea about this problem?

Thanks

Are you using Zonealarm 5? This is a known issue with ZA 5. You must
uninstall it completely, not just disable it from starting up. I went back
to 4.5 until they fix this bug.

Hi,
I do appreciate about your help. The system has no
problem after I uninstalled ZA 5.

Unfortunately, because I have installed McAfee firwall,
ZA 4.5 says it has compability problem with McAfee. Hope
ZA will release the update version soon.

Once again, thanks a lot for help.

There is a recent release of ZA that some people find has fixed the
problem with checkdisk. I don't know because I don't use ZA.

As well as the resolution suggested with respect to Zone
Alarm, you may also have a problem related to Symantec
Norton Ghost. Microsoft is aware of this problem and
have indicated that there will be a fix included as part
of Service Pack 2. Scary thought that...
