Cannot open PDF attachment

I recently got the fault, that I'm no more able to open a
pdf attachment.
When I try to open this file I get the message:
<<the system cannot find the file specified>>
If I copy this file to a different folder, I can open it
without any problems.
This happens ONLY to pdf files.
Has anyone noticed this problem and found a solution?

Action taken:
Acrobat Reader uninstalled and reinstalled.
Office Xp (incl SP1 and SP2) repair routine
no improvement!
