cannot open password protected file

My older HP with Windows XP crashed when motherboard blew. bought new tower
with Window XP and transferred files using external harddrive. Now can't open
some files but the one in particular I need is password protected. Have tried
taking ownership thru safe mode but when I open windows and My Documents,
only folders there are My Pictures and My Music. Can anybody advise. Thanks

forgot to add that I can open the file with Excel, but MS Works or Office
won't open it. The Excel is unreadable. Thanks
