Every time I try to open Internet Explorer, I get an error message stating, "Internet Explorer has encountered an error and must close." I downloaded IE 6 with SP1, but it did not help.

Thanks

I get the same error, just started last night and I had
only left my pc for a couple of hours. I went to compaq
and they recommended running ie.inf. It did not help me
but perhaps it will help you

Hi RCS,

Reinstalling Internet Explorer without examining the error-report dialog is useless, IMHO. Please read the note below:
--
When you click the Internet Explorer icon, window may flash a second and quits. Or, it may show an Error-Reporting dialog. This may be due to a malware Browser Helper Object which causes Internet Explorer process to terminate. If you see the Error-Reporting dialog, click "to see what data this report contains" and identify the Module Name causing this error. In most cases, it may be the spyware DLL. Therefore, reinstalling Internet Explorer [in case of a spyware DLL] may not help.

To test with: Disable third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer
1. Click Start, Run, and type inetcpl.cpl. [or control inetcpl.cpl]
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.
4. Restart Internet Explorer.

If this helps, read here for further troubleshooting:

Thanks, I went on to check a few more posts in the
newsgroup and noticed a lot of users have recently
encountered same problem and received similar advice;
Something to do with coolwebsearch. Problem resolved.

Thank you
