I cannot open what was an excel file. I get a box telling me file or
extension wrong it ends in xltx. help if anyone can

Sounds like you're using Excel 2007.

Did the file contain macros? If so, try changing the extension to .xlsm.
Alternatively, maybe this file was in (old) binary excel format. Try .xls too.
