Excel Cannot Open File-Excel Error..Stange

Trawled around the internet todya but no joy so hoping someone out there can help. Runn Vista with Office 2003 (yeh I know it's ancient but I know my way round it). Anyway as of today when I go to open an Excel doc (.xls) it comes up with an error saying 'cannot open file', However if you keep this open then open it again it works fine. Really annoying. Tried repair and re-install of office but no difference. Have tried the suggestion seen online of changing a setting in the general tab for excel but this wasn't checked so didn't apply to me. This is driving me mad. prepared to pay $30 via Paypal (to you or a charity) to anyone who comes up with a suggestion that works. Hope this little incentive may induce some responses.
