cannot open any website

whenever i type in a www. adress on the internet epxlorer
i get a message which says " cannot locate www.xyz.com.
make sure the path or the internet adress is correct."
but when i try to open the website through the favourites
options on the explorer it opens. why doesnt the explorer
navigate.
