cannot open 2003 in 2007

on this Vista computer 1 user profile cannot open word 2003 documents (all
other profiles can). I tried to change file association for .doc to Word or
Winword but it stays on Wordpad.

Also, the checkbox that says, always open with this program, is greyed out.
I assume this means I do have the admin rights though the user is an admin.

How do i fix this and do i need to elevate the admin rights and if so, how?
