Cannot not log on as administrator

I cannot log on to my computer as the administrator. My wife and I have
rights but cannot use our log ons. All we get is our desktop pictures.
Nothing else just the picture of our desktop. No start button, icons, task
bar or sys tray. I can use my kid's log on. But he is not an administrator
so I cannot update virus the virus scanner and I cannot get to my files (
really have to do my shcool work).

Can someone help me?

The program did not work. It did not restore my task bar or desk top icons
or my system tray. I am unable to do anything with my log on. It did not
work. I followed your instructions to the letter. I still have the same
problem.
I have tried to repair my my install via my XP CD and that does not work.
Are there any other suggestions?

For Kelly's utility, make sure you're using the Taskbar is Missing option,
it should also correct the Desktop icons issue.

If its a registry corruption, on the user level, then reinstalling won't
help, in most cases.

If the Taskbar is Missing option of Kelly's utility doesn't solve your
problem, see http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 195, right
column, Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar. This is the original VB Script
that was created to correct this issue. If it does solve your problem, post
back, so I can pass this information to Kelly. Instructions for VB Script
usage can be found at the top of Kelly's "tweaks" page.

I was using the taskbar is missing option. I tried all suggestions again.
And nothing. I still have nothing. The program by Kelly does not work and
the VBScript does not work. Any other options?

Ok, Al. Here's a previous post by Chris Lanier. See if it applies to your
situation.

Reboot Windows XP into Safe Mode
--How to start Windows XP in Safe mode--
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039

1) Goto Start>>Run>>Type "regedit"
2) Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete
"Explorer %SYSTEM%\Explorer.exe"
3) Reboot your PC as normal.

If that doesnt work...

1) Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Search in the
System32 directory for "explore.exe" or "explorer.exe" If the file exists
delete it.
2) Goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and scan your either system for
virus.
3) Reboot your PC.

NOTE: Do NOT delete "explorer.exe" from your C:\Windows directory!

You may try the following if you don't boot into Safe Mode.

1) Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
2) Goto the Applications Tab
3) Click New Task...
4) Type "C:\Windows\explorer.exe", hit Enter
5) Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Search in the

NOTE: Do NOT delete "explorer.exe" from your C:\Windows directory!

Also try a virus scan to clean things up.
1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and scan your either system for

3) Reboot your PC and see if you now have a desktop.

If that doesnt work goto...

This did not help either. The key for explorer.exe was not in my registry
nor was it in my Windows\System32. I could not access TrendMicro house call
or any other online virus scanning because I was not logged as an
administrator. My administrator accounts were not being recognized as
administrator accounts either. Plus I really could not use them. I tried
safe mode and no go there also. Any more suggestions?

I spent yesterday and last night (UK Time) sorting this
in my own PC

log onto your administrator acc. and then ctrl+alt+del
brings up WINDOWS TASK MANAGER. From here (bottom right
button you can access all your programs)

The problems relate IMHO to a folder called DDM located
on c: drive I've deleted this completley (I think its an
adware POS)

start by deleting sysu.exe under the processes tab this
will bring back your desktop icons and control bar

I had to completly delete ddm to enable correct boot up
there is a couple of programs running in processes @
startup that need deleteting before the file can be
deleted

Hope this helps kevin_tear@DELETETHIS Lineone.net

Thanks Kevin and Doug. I am back in business. But not with out some loss.
I had to make a new log on and delete the old one. The files that were with
it were supposed to go in a folder on my new logon's desktop. The folder
made it, the files did not. They have dissappeared. If any of you know how
I can find those files please let me know. I had school work in there.

For some appearant reason my previous log on was not doing anything.
Windows would log it on with the default profile settings and I had no admin
rights (even though it was supposed to). Also, I could not access it's
files from any other logon including the "Administrator" logon. Wierd. I
found tons of adware during my virsus scan. And that was not cool at all.
I will deffinately be more vigilant with my firewall and scanning.

Thanks again! And I hope that the info that you two shared with me will
help others.
