Guest

Now I am not able to login as Administrator. When I click on the user name,
it briefly says "loading personal settings", as if it is going to work, but
then the screen flashes and the display says "saving personal settings" and I
get returned to the welcome screen !!

It happend after Deleting some registry informations..
Another problem, I cannot boot into safe mode.
Please Help

I too have developed the above problem and when I try to go to the site
listed by Ramesh I get redirected to a search site.

Any other Ideas?

Thanks

Ramesh,

I am having the same trouble. However, the solution in the WSAUpdater
article does not seem to be the fix. The keys are already as they should be.

Do you have other suggestions?

Thank you,

Tim

Guest

Ramesh,

Thank you for your reply. This article does not appear to address the issue
I am having. Specifically, a password is required to login, and the article
describes a situation where a password is not required.

Do you have any other thoughts?

Thank you again,

Tim

Tim,

Is the problem seen for all the user accounts, or one in particular? If this
happens to all the profiles, it's a good idea to re-inspect the Userinit
value (as well as the Registry value type, and ensure that there is a
trailing comma after the userinit.exe, value). To view the Userinit
valuedata, you may need to edit the registry offline.

G

Guest

Ramesh,

The problem occurs for all (two) user accounts - one administrator, one
power user. It also occurs in safe mode.

I have checked the userinit value several times - there is definately a comma.

Thank you,

Tim

G

Guest

Ramesh,

I have resolved the issue with my old drive not booting. I removed the
DosDrives from the registry.

Thank you for your help.

Same issue. Sorry, I copied the reply from another chat where I was tracking
two related issues.

Anyway, removing the DosDrives resolved the login/logout issue.

Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback Tim. I'm saving this conversation in my Notes folder

Hi,

Not Ramesh but, if this is what I think it is, then see this:
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#blazefind

It would have helped if you included the original post(s) in your reply so
that others will have a clue as to what you are talking about.

Running out of ideas, Dwight. Can't think of anything else than a repair
install.

Hi Ramesh,

i faced similar problem. but none of the above solution solve my problem.
1) using the editior from (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/) I
checked that the "C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe," is in place
2)This is not about compromise by virus.
3)Happen after i sent my registry key for my Remote Users to update the
logon banner

See, the problem is this. we need to update the logon banner. HQ was
successfully logon with AD. We decided to update the Remotes office by
editing the registry key.

I made changes to mine registry key with the Banner Information at the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon key
on the 2 data named: "LegalNoticeCaption" & LegalNoticeText"

I have cleared the following (only these) value in the following data to
remove any site specific information before exporting

DefaultUserName=""
AltDefaultUserName=""
AltDefaultDomainName=""
DefaultDomainName=""

I kept the rest default as per MY machine and the final regkey is at the
bottom.
I then tested the registry key with 2 users in Johore (Malaysia) and Medan
(Indonesia), it turn out fine.
I massed mailed to my Remote Offices and now I have 2 users from
Japan(Osaka) and Korea (Seoul) having this sympton. It goes into
Login/logout loop. A check with Seoul shows that the Userinit data is
correct (using the same editor mentioned above.)

Prior to this, these users have never logon to their machine before, it's
autologon for them as they do not need to logon to any domain, it's all
local. Investigation show that my regkey has turn off the autologon for
them. It was initially thought to be credentials problem since they do not
know any password. But by using Administrator and keeping the password blank
allow them to logon. and hence the next problem, the login/logout loop. They
are both on win2k professional.

Question
1) What else can i check to get out of the loop?
2) Could the other registry data value has cause it? Should I have removed
the rest?? I thot it shouldn't affect.

juan,

I _think_ the blank values for DefaultDomainName and AltDefaultDomainName
may be causing this. But, I don't have a chance to repro the problem (my
systems are not in a domain). Apart from that, may be some of your systems
have Windows installed in a different drive, and so the Userinit registry
value hard-coded to C:\ being the reason?

Why not try this in the server groups (perhaps a crosspost)?

G

Guest

Thanks for reverting.

The PCs in Remote Offices are not on any Domain, they are all standalone
hence using the regkey to rollout banner...

hmm.. you are right abt the drive .. will try not hardcoding the
userinit.exe and see how...

do you think the other keys or data will cause any problem?
