1. After I ran ScanDisk, the Windows Logo and the
following message appeared in the center of the
screen: "Windows is starting up" and stayed frozen in the
center of the screen. I am able to move the cursor by
moving the mouse around but the Logo and message do not
move.
2. I clicked on the "Esc" key on the keyboard but the
Logo and message still remained in the center of the
screen.
3. I turned the main power switch off for 6 minutes, and
reset the modem for 1 minute. I then turned the power
back on but the Logo and message did not move.
4. A message then appeared that said, "A diskcheck has
been scheduled the next time you start the computer.
5. I restarted the computer and the diskcheck
automatically ran. When it finished, the following
message appeared: "System cannot logon." After about 20
minutes, a screen appeared with my name on the right
side. Beneath my name it said to click on my name, which
I did. Then I was logged on to the system.
6. I am a senior citizen, with limited knowledge and
experiencing using and trouble shooting a computer.
Therefore, I need simple, step-by-step instructions on
how to solve this problem. It has only started to happen
in the last several days.

Hello Ralph,
When you get access to your system, take a look in the
event viewer to see if there are any messages logged that may further
explain the problem.. Access the event viewer my clicking on START/
RUN and then type eventvwr.msc in the box and hit enter.
Take a look at the application, security and system messages. The
newest is at the top. Make sure you scroll back to the time frame of
the first occurrence of problems.
If there's anything syspicious, report back here.

Also, try scheduling a chkdsk so the volume can be checked:
START/RUN type chkdsk c: /r and press enter.
It will probably tell you that it needs to schedule the check at the
next boot. Agree to that and restart. Chkdsk /r will cause XP to do
a surface check so it'll take a bit longer.

If these operations don't reveal any clues or help at all, you should
run a full virus check and scan the computer for spyware.
