Cannot login to Yahoo - correct password repeatedly rejected

Up until 3 days ago, I was able to access my Yahoo mail through Windows Mail
with no problems whatsoever: all the servers, POP3 stuff, smtp, port numbers
etc had been set correctly, and there were no issues at all

However 3 days ago it randomly stopped working. I am not aware of making
any system changes that could have caused this. I am still able to log into
Yahoo fine.

Basically each time it tries to download mail, I get asked to "Login to
Yahoo!" and to put in my username and password (which shouldnt be needed
anyway as its already loaded into the system). As soon as I input them, it
instantly flashes up the same box again, and again and so on. As soon as I
cancel, I get the error message

Account: 'Yahoo!', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR invalid user/password', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Yet when I try to login to mail.yahoo.co.uk normally, I can log in fine with
the same username and password

Any ideas?

Go to Tools | Accounts, select the Yahoo account and click Properties. On
the Servers tab retype you account name and password.

Had already tried doing that. It didn't help unfortunately. Just tried once
more to double check, and still no success

The box about Secure Password Authentication is definitely unchecked like it
needs to be. The username and password boxes are definitely filled in
correctly and with the correct uppercase/lowercase combination

Its all a total mystery. It all worked fine till I had to log into flikr
(linked to Yahoo) the other night using a work username and password (ie not
my own login). Any chance that caused the problem?

First, if you are running either McAfee or Norton antivirus, uninstall them.
The antivirus has probably corrupted your password store.
Next, add a new mail account with the same settings as the old one,
then delete the old (corrupted) account.

Still not working :( Have tried deleting and reinstalling the account twice.
Have even done a system restore to a point when it used to be working by
still no luck. I just don't understand it

Yahoo mail continues to work fine for me - with the same password that I am
repeatedly typing into Yahoo. Will be delighted if someone would explain
this for me!

You didn't address what I said about your antivirus program.

I am not running either of the antivirus programmes that you mentioned. Right
at the minute I don't have any antivirus software running as did not have any
that would work with Vista

Are there any other programs that could have corrupted the password store?
I disabled User Account Control last week - could that have contributed?

Almost any type of security software can cause problems for Windows Mail:
anti-spam, firewall, anti-malware, as well as anti-virus.
Whether disabling UAC could cause the problem, I don't know, but it would
be easy enough to undo and see what happens.
