Cannot login to Win XP Home Edition due to disabled MS service

I have a Dell with Win XP Home Edition OS. I just loaded Norton SystemWorks
2006 and invoked one of the "Extra Features" which allow you to
disable/enable processes invoked when the system starts up. I wanted to
disable a process/application which always prompts me to load a CD to install
Microsoft Word each time I login. So.... I looked at all the processes that
are invoked, and thought I disabled the appropriate process.

Unfortunately, I chose poorly, and now as soon as I login (to either of the
4 login accounts I've establised) the system almost immediately logs back
out. I cannot log in to do anything - much less open the Norton utility
again to enable the process. The only thing I can think of is I mistakenly
disabled a microsoft service or process that is required in the login
process.

So, my question is, is there a way to enable this process without logging
in. Some way to perhaps get to the registry ??

I'm stuck because I can't check the processes that are (or aren't) being
loaded if I can't even get into Windows far enough to get past the login. Is
there a way I can edit the startup before opening Windows.

I've already tried startup in Safe Mode, Debug Mode, etc.

According to Dell, my only option is to go back to a previous System
configuration (which I can't do because I can't log in long enough to get to
the Start button) or to a PC Restore (which I definitely don't want to do as
I have some data on the PC I don't want to lose)

Any Ideas???

You could copy your data to USB memory sticks or an external hard drive
using Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) or alternatively place your HDD
in an external case or as a slave drive in another computer to access
your data.

If you have Recovery Console installed on your hard drive, or a Windows CD,
then you can use that to enable / disable particular services from starting
up.

It sounds as if you had renamed or deleted the file
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe. Without this file
you cannot log on. Here is a way to restore it:
- Insert your WinXP CD into some other WinXP/2000 PC.
- Insert a formatted floppy disk.
- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
- Type this: d:\i386\expand d:\i386\userinit.ex_ a:\userinit.exe {Enter}
- Repeate this exercise with a second floppy disk (in case the
first is unreadable).
- Take the floppy disks back to your PC.
- Boot your PC with your WinXP CD.
- Select Repair, then Recovery Console.
- Type this command:
copy a:\userinit.exe c:\windows\system32
