Cannot log in to Windows XP Pro

I just applied the latest security update from Microsoft
(via the automatic update). I now cannot log into Windows
XP. When I enter my password and hit OK, the computer
ceases to respond. I CAN, however, log into safe mode
with no problems.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
 
Boot up in safe mode and uninstall your latest security update (in
Add/Remove Programs if it is listed there - delete it if not). Have
Automatic Update activated and wait until it offers you the update you
remove. After removing the update, see if you can log in normally, which
hopefully you'll be able to do.

The update is KB828035. Uninstalling it did not fix the
problem. A System Restore (from safe mode) did.
