Once you are in safe mode, do a System Restore. You may need to go
back more than one, so start with the latest and if that doesn't work,
try another.

Start->Control Panel->System and Maintenance->Backup and Restore
Center, under 'Tasks' in the left-hand pane, choose "Repair Windows
using System Restore."

I hope this helps.

Make sure you don't have 'Caps Lock' or num lock on or something too.

583star: thank you very much solon fox but it would seem that system restore
has not been turned on! I'm not sure how this has happened. Thank you very
much for your help anyway.

Sorry for your troubles, I'm shooting in the dark here because I don't
know what else you may have tried.

Here are a few more suggestions:
1) in safe mode, change your password and try restarting in normal
mode
2) if you have a Vista install CD, then try running a system repair
from safe mode
3) while in safe mode, check your keyboard settings: go to Control
Panel, key in "keyboard status" in the search box and click on "Check
keyboard status". See if there is more than one driver, then click
properties and change settings if it needs to be changed. I'd go for
some generic driver first - I'm operating on the assumption that your
keyboard may be delivering different keys than you expect.

That's it for now. I'll keep thinking on it and let you know if
something else comes to mind.
