cannot locate server copy of your roaming profile

Hello,

Network Setup:
2 Domain Controllers: windows 2003 server Standard sp1 (DC1 & DC2).
Clients: Dell Windows 2000-sp4 and xp Pro-sp2 machines.

Problem:
Users can login to the domain with w2k pc's without any problems consisently
time after time without any problems.

Users logging in to the domain with xp pc's, sometimes receive error msg
"Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile"

This happens on the xp machines "only". Sometimes xp users can login just
fine to the domain; sometimes they will get the error msg.

I know that the profiles are correct, because I can login to the domain as
user1 or user50 from several different xp pc's. If I reboot any of the xp
boxes after logging in from that pc thats when they get " cannot locate
server copy of your roaming profile.

I can login to the domain with a w2k pc using user1 profile no problem.

I can login to the domain with a xp pc using user1 profile sometimes with no
problem, if I reboot the xp pc and try and login " cannot locate server copy."

No matter how many times I delete and re-add the user and computer accounts
as a domain admin the same thing happens only with the xp boxes.

Also re-ran sp2 on all the xp boxes; with same results.

We are using netbios over tcp/ip.

All 20 xp machines are new Dell GX620; same hardware, and same software.

Is it a xp or windows 2003 server issue? Is it a Service pack issue? Is it a
Secure digital signing issue from the client or server issue? Is it a Netbios
over tcp/ip issue?

Is it a shadow copy issue? I v'e look at all the google searches, Microsoft
kb links to no avail resolving this issue.

Just Frustrated...

Any help in the right direction is appreciated.

Thanks

Are these users tiring to log in with XP after having done so with 2K?
Logging into roaming profiles from different OS's is very problematic and
frequently a cause of profile corruption. It's not recommended.

Hi GTS and Thank you.

No, I was using the w2k machine to do a little troubleshooting to see if the
profile indeed was available and f I would get the same " Windows cannot
locate the server copy of your roaming profile. Just to see if the profile
was setup correctly.

FWIW - There were some problems like this discussed in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831651 This was supposed to have been
fixed in SP2. Maybe someone will have more current info. I haven't run
into any recent problems along the lines your seeing.
