Can anyone shed any light on this?

Dell PC, Win XP.

1. Initial problem with unmountable_boot_drive problem, and PC would not
boot

a. Ran chckdsk /r
b. Ran fixboot
c. Ran fixmbr

All in recovery console mode (this was advice I was given)

I now get fatal error when trying to boot up - unable to load auto check.
Then blue screen and shutdown.

Can anyone offer any guidance on how I overcome this so I can re-start my
PC, otherwise I guess I will have to re-load WinXP
which terrifies me as I will lose a lot of work that unfortunately I did
have backed up (I know idiot me!!)

many thanks

Get the data backed up right *now*. You may be able to get it (if the
hard drive will stay up and is not physically damaged) by using
Knoppix, a Bart's PE, or ERD Commander (very expensive). You will need
another computer to do this and a fairly high level of computer skills.
Only you know if this describes You.

As soon as you have the data backed up, run the Dell Diagnostics. Do
this by pressing F12 as the computer is starting up. You may have
hardware failure, with the hard drive being the first suspect.

Important: If the data is crucial and the hard drive is making any
unusual noises, don't even do any of the above. Contact a professional
data recovery company such as DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com),
Ontrack, or Seagate Recovery Services.
