Had a perfectly running 98 and decided to upgrade to XP. After entering the
product key, it went to screen that said checking hardware. It never comes
out of that screen. Is there a log that would help me find out what the
problem is?

Here is a copy and paste of what I found:

Error:
Cannot get main entry point for c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VIPERSTI.CPL. Error:127
[ERROR=127 (7Fh)]
***

Error:
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ds1.cpl failed unexpectedly. Error:0
***

It said I would have to get updated drivers for my USB scanner and yhat My
Lotus Works was incompatible. I already uninstalled Lotus and removed the
scanner. I also took out all cards except the graphics card and disabled
everything onboard that I could do without. still get to the same spot and it
hangs up, with the same error.

The file "VIPERSTI.CPL" is most likely related to your scanner as a
Google search shows.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything that may be related
to the scanner.
Also go to Device Manager and remove the scanner.
