cannot install programs

T

tickridge

When I attempt to install a program (Printmaster or Office
97 [for Powerpoint])a window pops up:
16 BIT WINDOWS SUBSYSTEM
C:\WINDOWS32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The file system is not suitable
for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications.
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Updated to SP2 about 2 months ago - after first attempt
caused system to crash & had to re-install XP home.
HELP?

I pulled up the following solution:
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue: 1. Insert the CD into the CD drive
or DVD drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. At the command prompt, type the following commands,
pressing ENTER after each command:

expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_
c:\windows\system32\config.nt

expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_
c:\windows\system32\command.com

exit

After typing each line, I get the reply:
"destination is not a directory"

Suggestions?

Boy do I feel foolish. Should have picked up on that when
I printed it out & 'CD-ROM Drive Letter' was in Italics.
Guess I've gotten rusty in my old age. After a few errors
inputting the lines, the system now installs programs
flawlessly.
Thanks.
