Cannot install printer due to policy issue

Hello;

I'm trying to setup network printing on a Windows 2003 server in a AD
domain, where the server will hold the queues and the printer drivers. I am
using HP's JetAdmin Web to setup the queues and working with LaserJet
printers.

I get through the process of creating the printer and queues, but in the end
the result comes back as "failure". The details tell me "The printer driver
is not compatible with a policy enabled on your host computer the blocks NT
4.0 drivers." While I am not trying to install drivers for NT 4.0, I
believe that is the default drivers JetAdmin is trying to install, along
with the Win2000/2003 drivers that I want available.

Where is the policy I can modify to allow me to install this printer? I
believe it a local policy for the server itself and not a domain policy, but
I could be wrong.

Thanks

I'm not sure about the policy (although Power Users should be sufficient
access) but if you have the latest JetAdmin (7.8), you can specify what
"additional" drivers you want or simply skip the step during the creation of
the queue. Alternatively, you may be loading old drivers but Jet Admin should
know which to load based on the OS of the target server.

Instead of disabling the policy, it really is a better idea to install only
the 2000/2003 drivers... even if this means doing it manually through
JetAdmin, or contacting HP to see if they have a better version of JetAdmin.

Anyway, to disable the policy, go to Start--> Run ---> GPEDIT.MSC --> Local
Computer Policy --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates -->
Printers --> and *disable* the policy called "Disallow installation of
printers using kernel-mode drivers." This may affect stability since a
crash of the print driver could bluescreen the whole system, with these
older drivers. You may however need to make these changes through the
domain's group policy if it is overwriting the local settings.
