cannot install new software

Windows XP will not install new software from my CD drive. I don't even get
an error message. I go to 'Run D:/setup.exe and the CD drive spins the CD
very fast for about 30 seconds and then stops. CD drive works fine. Any
ideas?

re you sure the application actually HAS a "setup.exe" file on the CD?
Some do not.

Yes. There is clearly a setup.exe on this CD. I have also tried to install
the new software by using the "add and remove programs" option. That does
not work either. I do not even get an error message. The CD just spins fast
for about 30 seconds and then stops.

Did you try the CD in a different system? Maybe the CD is damaged.

Use Explorer and navigate to the CD-ROM. Make sure you can see
all the content. Normally, CD-ROM drives employ Autoplay, so the
setup should start automatically from the disk. Have you checked the
Services mapping to make sure that Windows Installer is set Manual.
This is necessary if the program utilizes a .msi

It might help if you posted what program it is you're trying to install.

A problem with just one CD? Or any CD?

I am installing (or attempting to install) TaxCut Standard.
Windows Expoorer shows all of the content on the CD. There is a setup.exe
file on the CD. The CD spins fast when it is first inserted into the
computer. It is probably running the setup.exe program. But nothing happens
and there is no error message.
