cannot initiate search in windows xp

I recently had some problem in my computer after
installing an NEC DVDRW 1300A when the desktop icons and
the start menu compltely disappeared though they could be
seen when windows opened in safe mode all reappeared.
After several attempts to fix this I ultimately had to
restore my computer to original install. Initially all
was fine and search worked. However now every time I try
to search a file , I get a message saying that an
essential file needed for search is missing and setup
needs to run again . Also the computer automatically
tries to dial up my internet connection. Virus scan and
norton has not found any problems. How can I fix this
short of the nightmare of reinstalling everything once
again. Any help will be appreciated

To correct the first issue, if it should arise again:

Repair/Customize Desktop, Quick Launch, Taskbar and Notification Area

For the second issue:

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf
file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files
from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You may need to adjust your
Windows Explorer options to show hidden files and folders. You can also
click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf
folder.
