Cannot import files

I have a Sony Handycam with the hard disk drive.
I have all of the current updates.
Windows Movie Maker is the only program giving me a problem and it will not
recognize the device.
I get this error:
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Leah & Doug\My Documents\My
Pictures\9-3-2008\20080809131541.mpg cannot be imported because the codec
required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have
already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows
Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Any ideas?

Try total video2dvd which supports any formats video which is very
easy to use.
