Cannot import DAT file from VCD after upgrade to MM2

I have got Movie Maker 1 and I used to be able to import from DAT files from VCDs

Now, after upgrade to Movie Maker 2, I cannot import from VCD any more

1. What could I do to convert the VCD DAT files to files that are readable from Movie Maker 2

2. Or, what could I do to downgrade from to Movie Maker 1

An alternative solution to MM1...copy *.DAT to hdd, rename *.DAT to *.mpg.
As long as source files are of valid VCD format (mpeg layer-1), they should
easily import into MM2 utilizing Windows supplied layer-1 codec.
