Cannot highlight data to copy and paste

I am a rather experienced user and am familiar with copying and pasting
processes. This problem started recently and seems to be getting worse:

When I attempt to copy something by left clicking the end and dragging to
the beginning (or visa versa) the item does not highlight. If I do it 5-8
times it finally will highlight. A real drag (no pun intended) this is!

Since I have Cursor XP installed (have had for years) I thought that might
be the problem so I disabled that but the problem still exists. I haven't
made any major changes to my system and tried a System Restore but no help.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance

Another mothod is to put the cursor at the beginning of a line and then do a
SHIFT-END and that line should be highlighted. (Works the other way too -
SHIFT-HOME).

Does it work?
