Cannot get Windows XP Pro to update

I've been trying to update to SP3, but I keep getting a message that Windows
XP Pro SP3 was not able to complete the update, or something like that.

I have removed my virus checker but this has not resolved the problem.

Would it help if I tried to boot in safe mode and do the installation from
there?

Worked like a charm.

With your help, I finally found a site to actually download the installation
file and that worked great.
