Hi,

A friend of mine has Windows XP home (upgraded from ME, but
not converted to NTFS)

Last night she was trying to install some scanner drivers
(which failed).

It may or may not be related, but this morning when she
tried to boot up she gets a blue screen just after the
Windows loading screen (the one with the little green
progress bar) with an error message saying "One of your
disks needs to be checked for consistancy", "Volume serial
Number: 1be6-2b74"......then it checks the disk for a few
seconds and then up comes the log on screen...

....but, when she clicks ok to log on, her computer starts
to make a loud repetitive sound, similar to a floppy drive
trying to be accessed over and over again, and is unable to
get to the desktop!!!

I have never encounted this problem before and have no idea
what to do!!! :(

Any advice in as much detail as possible would be greatly
appreciated.

regards

If the "loud repetitive sound" is coming from the hard drive, the hard
drive is toast. You can download a diagnostic utility from the drive
mftr. to be sure. Obviously, you'll need to do this from a different
computer. Make a bootable floppy and boot the sick pc with it. Do a
full test of the drive. BTW, the drive failure would have only been
coincidental with the scanner software installation. If the drive is
bad (as I suspect from your description), the only thing to do is
replace it, install Windows and all updates, drivers, programs from
cd's, and restore data from backups.
