Cannot Get to Some Web Sites in IE 6.0

With IE 6 and XP SP2, I can get to some web sites but not others. For
example, I can get to Google, CNN, EBay, Amazon, Microsoft, MSN and
Earthlink, but I cannot get to the pages that display web mail at hotmail.com
or Earthlink’s web mail page. I also cannot register some software, like
Norton Anti-Virus at the Symantec web site. I am using a dial-up connection.
When I go to the pages listed above that I cannot reach, I either get a Page
Not Found screen in IE or a message that I could not be connected to the
server. If I go to other computers I can get to the web sites I cannot reach
on my PC. I am running NAV 2005 and the MS firewall is on. I have turned off
the firewall and uninstalled NAV with no difference. MSN support told me to
reinstall Windows XP.

It is possible to block certain sites through the HOSTS file found in the
Windows directory. Could this be it ?

if 127.0.0.1 is put before a sites name then that site cannot be reached.

Hi,
Check for a HOSTS file. HOSTS file. With Windows XP Home, go to
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Try to open the HOSTS file. When
asked which program to use, choose Notepad from the list. If there are no
entries except for some examples, that file isn't blocking anything and
isn't causing the problem. More info at http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/ If
there are redirect entries in the HOSTS file, you can edit them out and save
the file.

I am having that trouble too but it is only Microsoft, MSNBC, MSN and
Hotmail. What are the hosts files and how can I fix the problem?

Search for HOSTS. The one you want will not have an extension and may be
hidden. The location depends on your Windows version.

I did that but the hosts file was empty (0 bytes) I am really at a loss. I
tried to get into Microsoft's French website (www.mircosoft.fr) and it
started to connect but was redirected to www.microsoft.com/french and then
stopped.

If the company I work for has DSL, could it be just a problem on my line and
no one else's?

I don't see how it can be a line problem.
What firewall are you using and does it allow one to block particular sites?
