I have a computer on my network that will ping other computers inside and
outside my network but will not find any site on the internet even if I type
in the numerical numbers.

I have checked the computer so that all the numbers are the same except its
ip address and it just will not work .

I hafve also installed service pack 2 of xp on the system.

one thing that I think is strange is that when I ping a site I get the
following

pinging ## with 32 byte of data

the ## represent a degree (temp) sign followed by 2dots over a y

there is also a beep as that comes up.

any ideas how to fix this??????????

thanks for your help.

Really sounds as if something is really hosed - an "o" or a "y" with 2 dots
over the top is usually undisplayable characters, hence the beep - you may
try to completely remove all Connection types from "Local Area Connection",
remove the "Local Area Connection", remove the NIC in Device Manager, and
reboot, letting Windows reinstall the driver for the NIC along recreating
"Local Area Connection" with all the default connection types.
